Owens Corning is one of the most popular options for roofing materials on the market. And for good reason—with a stellar product warranty, you can trust that the product will last, but if it doesn’t, you’ll have that protection and reassurance.
It’s why so many homeowners choose to install Owens Corning. Out of ten roofing projects, a minimum of seven projects are roofed with Owens Corning, and the three that aren’t Owens Corning are usually for aesthetic reasons, such as preferring a metal roof.
Owens Corning is Easy for Us to Install and Troubleshoot
The installation is easy compared to other roofing products. It’s why our contractors like to install it as well.

However, with Owens Corning, certain contractors (like us!) can offer an industry-leading warranty—not only for the supplies themselves, but the workmanship as well. This means if you have any installer error in your roofing project, the warranty will totally cover the repair and corrections.

What Are the Downsides of Owens Corning Roofing?
I had a hard time with this one, as Owens Corning—even to installers—is an all-around solid product.
However, general downsides with asphalt roofing are that:
- Over time, they will lose granules. The granule coating increases water-resistance and reduces physical impact to your roof. This is part of the natural aging process with roofing shingles, and why you need to replace your roof every 20 to 25 years.
- As shingles age, the colors fade away. Much of the colors that asphalt roofing offers are the granules themselves, so when roofs age and granules fall off, your roof loses its original color.
If these downsides seem worrisome to you, let me reassure you: it’s all a normal part of an asphalt roof’s lifespan—and not unique to Owens Corning. Other types of roofing materials, such as metal or slate don’t have problems with granular loss since neither is made with a granule coating.
What I Always Tell Homeowners About Owens Corning
Now that you know why we prefer Owens Corning over other roofing brands and materials, here are some helpful tips for you to look through and decide which roofing color will be the smartest for your home.
- The lifespan of Owens Corning Duration Shingles is 25 to 35 years. This assumes that there aren’t installer errors or problems with the materials, and that ventilation and insulation are adequate.
- Owens Corning has an industry leading materials AND workmanship warranty. The general warranty with Owens Corning will cover any material costs, and if you sign with a Platinum Preferred contractor such as Pacific Exteriors, there is an additional warranty just for workmanship and installation.
- Decide on your roofing color by comparing it to homes around you. Regions in America have slightly different color options. (I like Estate Gray—it’s a good mix of light to medium grays that give a nice accent without being a super dominant color that draws your eye.)
